We live in an increasingly hectic and stressful environment, characterized by restlessness and psychosomatic disorders. Jesus Christ's offer to give us rest comes at just the right time. But does the Lord really mean to eliminate our inner turmoil? Isn't He mostly just used as a "heavenly errand boy" and "soul soother"?
In fact, we are largely responsible for most of our mental and mental-physical needs and disorders. And in this regard, the LORD does not promise us rest. Rather, we are to act responsibly and consistently clarify and purify our lives in the light of the complete Word of God. This will eliminate all inner turmoil and most of our illnesses, etc. And we do not need to ask the LORD for help with this.
In the immediate context of Matthew 11:28-30, however, when studying the chosen words of the Lord Jesus Christ, it quickly becomes clear that the true reasons for unrest, fears, etc. must be defined quite differently. These are religious yokes that are or were imposed on sincere followers of the Lord by teachers who adhere to a different (false) gospel. They are the modern legal scholars in "Christian" garb who, unfortunately, populate most "Christian" churches, congregations, and the like.
They place heavy burdens (yokes) on people (Mt. 23:4) – they place a yoke on the necks of the disciples (Acts 15:10) – it is the yoke of slavery that Paul spoke of to the afflicted and tormented Galatians (Gal. 5:1). But how did this come about? The reason is a profound ignorance of the true gospel of Christ, which is why a different gospel is being preached (Gal. 1:6). The lecture carefully examines the structure of true and false gospels. It is highly relevant today, because almost all modern "Christian" preaching is based on the false gospel! Consequently, most "believers" bear a yoke that makes them weary and tormented burden bearers.
Now, instead, the Lord Jesus Christ offers us to bear his yoke. In principle, this means yoke against yoke. But what exactly does the yoke of the Lord look like? How is it actually borne? How is it applied in everyday life? Who bears the main burden? And doesn't this lead to excessive demands once again? These and other questions will be carefully addressed in the lecture. There is a particularly interesting connection to the marriage covenant, which also mentions a "yoke" in the original text. When this is applied to the relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, the text of Matthew 11:28-30 is wonderfully deciphered.
Those who have truly embraced the rest offered by the Lord and live in it every day are freed from all religious slave drivers and, above all, experience total rest in Christ, accompanied by the most wonderful fruits in everyday life, which we constantly give away and spread to those around us. A profound mystery – the mystery of Christ!
