Our personal data is now being collected in more places – by government agencies, organizations, and many others – along with all the associated problems, such as data misuse, data theft, or data loss. Yet there is one book in which we should be recorded under all circumstances – and very few people, even Christians, seem to be aware of this. It’s about being recorded in the “Book of Life.” After all, our entire “eternity” depends on it – or we will suffer a terrible total loss! But what exactly is this “Book of Life”? How does one get properly recorded in this book? What are the consequences if our name is listed there? Or is this book actually a person?
The prophet Isaiah received a brilliant prophetic vision concerning the “Book of Life” – as always, presented in code. We find the context in Isaiah 4:2-6. This text contains a series of most glorious references, for example, to the perfectly accomplished work of salvation by the Lord Jesus Christ and the effects thereof when a person is truly “in Christ” and remains so. Thus, by faith alone through grace, he receives all the attributes of the LORD’s life, for example, “holiness.” Without this holiness of Christ, there is neither an entry in the “Book of Life” nor participation in God’s eternal plans for us humans. Or we are freed from all the baggage of our lives and appear spotless, blameless, unblemished, and perfect in Christ before the throne of God – because of the work of Christ on the cross. These are just a few fragments embedded in this prophetic text.
In the context of Rev. 20:15 and Rev. 21 (the New Jerusalem), it becomes dramatically clear just how crucial the entry into the “Book of Life” truly is. It is simply a synonym for the Lord Jesus Christ Himself and, for example, for the so-called “Tree of Life” that stands in God’s paradise. Throughout human history, the eternal God and LORD chooses a specific people who, through their intimate union with the Lord Jesus Christ, are not only written in the “Book of Life,” but also embody within themselves all the life-giving qualities of the Lord Jesus Christ that are required of humanity. Therefore, they will go to the LORD and carry out God’s eternal plans for humanity and, thereby, for His entire creation.
A topic that is more relevant than ever – and more momentous than any human achievement on this earth. In the broadest sense, it is a matter of life and death!
